The words on the left side of the @ point to You.
The words on the right side of the @ indicate Your Internet address.  

If You use the email address just for fun or to remain anonymous, any character combination on the right side of  @ is okay.
If You want to display credibility, then it is often not really okay. 

If You know the people behind the name, it is not a problem.
We all know msn.com, tucows.com, yahoo.com, etc.
Strange names, yes - But credible.

So, why should You not have firstname.lastname@lastname.com?
Or with initials like  f.l@lastname.net? or something like that? 
Really, why not? 

Look at business people.
They know why their email address has the company name after the @ .
They often have a welcome page, a blog or an online storefront.
They are on the World Wide Web!
